I had similar issues around this part too !! Funny thing was that when I played Crysis for the first time, I had a Win XP32 setup, with half the RAM I have now, and performance was virtually flawless from start to finish !!
Left it some months; time in which I upgraded to XP 64, and doubled my RAM. Again; flawless performance. In fact it appeared to perform better.
Left it again for a few months; no changes to my rig; played it again, and started experiencing choppy framerates and crashes !!
Upgraded again, more recently, to Win 7 64bit, tried Crysis and it seems to be all good except for issues I had with the last patch released.
had to uninstall, then reinstall leaving out that patch.
